Our Tex-Mex products
"Tex-Mex” is the name of the cuisine that developed in the border region of Texas and Mexico. It is a culinary mixture of the traditional cuisines of northern Mexico, of the Spanish-speaking people of Texas, and the numerous other immigrants into Texas from countries such as Germany, the Czech Republic and of course the USA. Texas was once a part of Spain and later an independent republic. Popular items from Tex-Mex include fajitas, quesadillas, nachos, enchiladas, tortilla chips and much more.
With us the salsas are the primary focus! “Salsa” is nothing other than the Spanish word for “sauce”, but in this case, “salsa” refers to the well-known, tomato-based, at least a little bit spicy condiment that is often used as a dip or used generously over fajitas and tacos. Tex-Mex salsa was originally made without specific recipes – just whipped up fresh on the day and served with a meal to be eaten immediately.
Tex-Mex salsa is perfect as a dip with tortilla chips as well as condiment for fajitas, nachos, tacos, burgers, chili con carne, quesadillas, enchiladas, grilled food, barbecue and more!
In addition to the salsas we will be introducing other hot sauces, chips and other regional specialities from Texas, Mexico and the southern US. The goal for Rio Grande Tex-Mex is not only to produce delicious products, but also to make our traditions known to the Swiss public! It’s more than just a “nacho dip” – it’s a lifestyle!

KATHELENE & RICHARD WEISS
Kathelene and Richard Weiss are originally from Texas but have called Canton Bern in Switzerland home since 2012.
As enthusiastic home-cooks they were always trying to recreate their Texas home recipes here in Switzerland but found that the necessary ingredients and products were often hard to find. The search for a great, authentic salsa seemed hopeless. But after years of kitchen tinkering and using locally found ingredients, they were finally able to develop a satisfying recipe!
The pair have created three flavours of salsa that are sure to not only win over the Swiss palate but would also be among the best in Texas!

IDEAS FOR YOUR PERFECT MEAL
Tex-Mex is not only one or two dishes: it’s a whole culinary tradition. It is often assumed to be the same as Mexican cuisine, but Tex-Mex is its own thing! Tex-Mex is about as similar to Mexican as Swiss-German is to High German: yes, they are related, but still different. You cannot compare the food in Mexico City with that in Austin!
Rio Grande Tex-Mex offers products to Switzerland that aim to introduce the variety of flavours and traditions from the Texas, Rio Grande and Gulf-coast regions. This includes not only the Mexican-influenced dishes but also classic American favourites such as BBQ as well as the unique flavours of the traditionally French-speaking Cajun and Creole peoples who live along the Gulf Coast, from Louisiana through to eastern Texas.
The cuisine is more easily explained with recipes than with words. You’ve got to try it!
