La Norteña, or “northern woman”, is a way to describe a woman from the north of Mexico or the Rio Grande border area. These Norteños, or “northerners”, are largely responsible for Tex-Mex cuisine and also have their own strong music and dance culture, which heavily influences the region.

The beloved “Cinco de Mayo” holiday celebrates a Mexican victory over the French empire in 1862. During the festivities of day the women of the region may dress in colourful dresses in order to display their pride.
